Wimbledon 2025 Preview
WIMBLEDON 2025
Wimbledon courts are a grass surface, meaning the ball and players will be skidding and sliding on the court. The grass gives a lower bounce but the ball retains more speed. These courts favour a fast serve, often being unreturnable, but play-styles of serve and volley are more complimentary to the surface. Since last year, the courts at Wimbledon have gotten faster. Playing on a fast grass court means the ball skids and stays low, making rallies shorter and favouring aggressive players with big serves, quick reactions, and strong net skills. It’s harder for defensive baseliners to thrive, as there's less time to react. Slice shots and serve-and-volley tactics become more effective, and the surface rewards players who can dictate points early.
The most notable change at this year’s championships brings it in line with the majority of ATP and WTA tournaments, along with two of the other three grand slam tournaments: the abandonment of line judges in favour of electronic line calling.
Over the next two weeks in London, Wimbledon will see a tale of two weather phases that will significantly impact court conditions and playing styles. From June 28 to July 1, expect hot and dry conditions with temperatures reaching up to 33°C. These conditions will keep the grass courts fast and slick, favouring big servers and aggressive players who thrive on low, skidding bounces. Short rallies, lots of aces, and quick points will dominate. It’s the ideal environment for serve-and-volley tactics and slice-heavy games. From July 2 onward, the weather cools, with cloudier skies and occasional rain. This shift will soften the grass, slowing the ball down and causing higher bounces, which benefit more defensive or baseline-oriented players. Matches may become more physical with longer rallies, and weather interruptions could affect player rhythm and momentum.
Quarter 1
Jannik Sinner being world number one, has a pretty straight forward road to the quarter finals. He is expected to play Lorenzo Musetti, last year's semi-finalist. However, he has not played a match on grass before this grand slam, and he has a relatively difficult route to the quarter finals. Facing the possible likes of Opelka, Nakashima and then Shelton. Shelton in 3-set matches is next level and I expect an upset here.
Prediction: Sinner defeats Shelton
Quarter 2
Expect quarter two to be far more hotly contested. British number one Jack Draper is technically the player seeded to advance, however number six seed and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic also lurks in this quarter. Throw in the dark horse that is Bublik, and it's anyone's game. My pick is for Djokovic to advance. He’s simply been the third-best player in Grand Slams this year, and his toughest opponent would be Alex Di Minaur. On the other side of the draw, British number one, Jack Draper who also has an easy run to the quarter finals would have to play Halle champion Bublik, but who knows whether he will turn up. But the way he has been playing recently shows that he is up for it.
Prediction: Djokovic defeats Draper
Quarter 3
Quarter three is by far the most open of the Wimbledon draw. Alexander Zverev is technically the top seed, with Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev the other top-10 seeds. However, grass is Zverev’s worst surface by far – he’s never been beyond the round of 16 here – while Fritz and Medvedev are both having underwhelming years. Fritz’s road to the quarter is an obstacle course, he plays some big names and then would need to face Medvedev. Coming off the win at Eastbourne, I expect him to get to the quarter finals. However, this means that the two “chokers” would meet in the quarters, and that could go either way.
Prediction: Fritz defeats Zverev
Quarter 4
This is the quarter of weak seeds, dangerous unseeded players… And Carlos Alcaraz. Spoiler alert: we have Alcaraz moving through to the semi-finals. As for who he’ll play in the quarters, that’s another question. Despite Holger Rune being the next highest seed after Alcaraz, the Spaniard is more likely to play one of Frances Tiafoe, Jiri Lehecka or Tallon Griekspoor. Rune is playing some patchy tennis at the moment, and cannot afford to be off his game as he’s staring down the barrel of three tough matches to open his Wimbledon campaign.
Prediction: Alcaraz defeats Lehecka
Semi Finals
